January 2012- Steve Garcia

WASHINGTON COUNTY, UT – The Healthy Dixie Council has selected Steve Garcia as the recipient of the Healthy Dixie Award for January 2012. Steve has been instrumental in establishing the Hurricane City Pickle Ball courts.

June 2011 - Winny VanGils

WASHINGTON COUNTY, UT – The Healthy Dixie Council has selected Winny VanGils as the recipient of the Healthy Dixie Award for June, 2011. Winny was instrumental in reviving the Centennial Park Community Garden in St. George. With the help of 10 volunteers they used grow boxes the city was no longer using and started the first community garden. With her encouragement the city has since rebuilt the garden with a fence around it.

March 2011 - Lucy Ormond

HURRICANE, UT – The Healthy Dixie Council has selected Lucy Ormond as the recipient of the Healthy Dixie Award for March, 2010. In less than a year Lucy has been instrumental in getting a two and a half mile section of natural trail in the Hurricane side of the Confluence Park approved and built. She also got an approved bicycle route designated in Hurricane City with donated money for signage.

“Her enthusiasm and dedication to trails, both building them and using them, is an inspiration to us all.” says Toni Foran, who nominated Lucy for the award.

January 2011 - April Keil

WASHINGTON COUNTY, UT – The Healthy Dixie Council has selected April Keil as the recipient of the Healthy Dixie Award for January, 2011. April is a local Zumba instructor that inspires all around her to be healthier and embrace their best self. She is very active in the community and teaches free fitness classes. Everyone who does Zumba with April does it because she makes them feel special.

"April not only encourages you to exercise she encourages you to be happy in your life and to help out whenever you can, said LaRae Nelson, who nominated April for the recognition, "You can't help but smile just thinking of April". Amber Spencer, who also nominated April said, "April inspires all around her to be embrace their inner goddess. She really brings out the best in people."

January 2011 - Safe Kids

WASHINGTON COUNTY, UT – The Healthy Dixie Council has selected Safe Kids Washington County as the recipient of the Healthy Dixie Award for January 2011. Safe Kids is a local coalition that works to minimize the greatest threat to our youth's lives, vehicle accidents. The coalition offers regular free car seat checks, bike rodeos, and supports International Walk to School Day.

"Safe Kids has been instrumental in putting together free car seat checks throughout the county." said Jordan Mathis Healthy Dixie member, who nominated Safe Kids for the award. "According to a 2004 study each seat checked at these events saves society over $500. But to the family whose child is safe after an vehicle crash this service is priceless."
